This is Part 2 of series to cover User Profile Service Application using ADI (Active Directory Import) Sync.
Part 1 – How to create a Sync connection using ADI, Simple
Part 2 – Walk through Synchronization process and overview of default mapped properties, Confusing.
Part 3 – Map property like Work email with AD and Sync with SharePoint using ADI. Lil Tricky.
In Part 1 we created a user profile service application and change sync option to ADI mode. In Part 2 we will execute a sync with ADI default options, review how mapping is confusing for default properties and in Part 3 will configure non-default ADI property to sync with AD and confirm if value has been imported in to SharePoint.
From Central Administration page click on Mange Service Application > click on user profile service application created in Part 1.
Click on “Start Profile Synchronization” >check box for Start Full Synchronization and click on OK.
Once Synchronization is completed you will see a number of user on the top right imported from AD in to the SharePoint and all properties mapped by default will sync with the SharePoint.
Let’s click on the “Mange User Properties” and review list of all mapped properties, this is where confusion starts. Manage properties page will look like this. Note, no mapping defined for except Account Name property.
From the screen shot above it seems like properties like First Name, Last Name, Wok Phone, Department etc. are not mapped currently. But this not true. By default, if AD is populated with all the information required all these properties will fetch information from AD based on the mapping.
To verify this, click on “Manage User Profile” link on “Manage Profile Service” page. Search for a user name and click on “Edit My Profile” from the drop down next to user name in search results.
Below is screen shot to show properties that are mapped by default and were successfully populated with information from AD after successful sync.
Even thou it seems like there is no mapping for the properties, below is list of some of the properties mapped by default when using ADI option in my SharePoint environment.
- Account Name
- First Name
- Last Name
- Name
- Work phone
- Title
- Job Title
- Department
- Manager
- Web site
- Public site redirect
- Distinguished Name
- Office
In Part 3 of this series, I will show how to configure other AD attribute like “mail” with SharePoint profile property “Work email” by default this property is not configured and will not bring in the email from AD in to SharePoint.
